My pedagogical approach uses personal biography as a lens to view social structure. Analyzing one’s location in social and historical context can reveal how power operates in society. A central goal for my teaching is that students learn to identify social forces that shape their own experiences. Using the self as a tool for social analysis speaks to my pedagogical commitment to intersectionality as a lens through which to understand how social structures impact group experiences in systematically different ways. I routinely teach groups of students from diverse age groups and racial/ethnic, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds. Intersectionality theory has proved a useful tool across the diversity of my students to engage not only with sociological concepts, but also with each other.
